Chapter 11

Free Voice Leading

  • closed and open positions teach us the rules of voice leading but they are in no way the most optimal form
  • when we follow a more casual positioning these other two forms will inevitably arise as a biproduct
  • we no longer need to make the inner voice subordinate to the upper!
    • meaning that they no longer need to be monotonous
  • outer and inner voices
    • outer reminders
      • soprano
        • inclined to steps but not averse to leaps, they cannot be consecutive to one another
      • bass
        • leaps of 4ths and 5ths are common
        • scale wise motion in contrary motion to the soprano is also common
    • inner voices
      • alto + tenor
        • will sustain tones!!! [but only according to the harmonic rhythm]
        • does not get too close to one another or to the bass
