Chords of the minor and diminished seventh

  • both chords of the 7th formed from the 7th scale degree
  • in major = chord of the minor 7th
    • in modern harmony this is a half diminished chord
  • in minor = chord of the diminished 7th
    • in modern harmony this is a fully diminished chord
  • how to resolve these chords
    • pretend they are dominant 9th chords that do not have their fundamental
    • therefore the lowest tone resolves up while all the other tones resolve down
      • one exception
        • if in the chord voicing, the 3rd is below the 7th, it must be led up
        • this is to avoid parallel 5ths
  • inversions
    • they have the same names as the dominant chords
  • these chords should be prepared, but it does not need to be
