transient modulation

  • passes through one or two keys before landing in the desired one
  • we are advised to not stray too far from the “normal course”
    • meaning circle of 5ths
  • when we reach the final key, we should make the prolonged cadence
  • when a sequence implies a modulation, it does not need to modulate in the same direction
  • transient implies that going through key areas means not following a strict tonic to dominant function
    • however, sequences can allow for this
      • fourths and fifths leaps in the bass
    • with 5 voices we could do such a sequence with chords of the 9th
  • construct a modulation sequence
  • analyze
