COMPOSER’S NOTES

Missa Sanctæ Crucis was written for the presbyteral ordination of Deacon Matthew Jewell of the Diocese of Austin. The main inspiration of the piece was that of Deacon Matthew, as he wished to have the ordinaries of the Mass sung in the language of the Church, Latin. Principal liturgies in the Diocese of Austin are synonymous with the usage of brass instrumentalists, and with no masses readily available in Latin, the Mass presented here was envisioned. Following, then, the outline of the ordinaries presented by the USCCB, and then superimposing the most current translations of the ordinaries in both English and Spanish, this presented Mass setting offers a trilingual option for parish and diocesan celebrations. Clear references are made to other more ancient masses to the attuned participant of the liturgy.
